Dreams of Life

Foot Bridge Over The River

I'm a city raised boy who dreams of the country life, so having married into a family of farmers was a wonderful thing. Both Janene and I dream of life on a farm - homesteading, gardening, and raising the kids in the country. Every time I visit one of the family farms, I feel even more drawn to "the life."

The Fence

We recently had the chance to attend a graduation party for one of the cousins, out at their farm. Man alive, my soul simply sang at the beauty, and the life. At home, we've started a veggie garden (not quite there, but soon to have almost 600sq ft of space, plus containers, plus blueberries / raspberries), a mini-orchard (with 7 fruit trees), plans for a greenhouse and a full container garden, and full landscaping. We expect to introduce rabbits, bees, and perhaps a goat as well as chickens sometime in the next couple of years. We're working to reduce our footprint, increase our self-sustainability, and introduce practical knowledge and experience in the youth of our children.

A River Runs Through It

As I was contemplating our goals, my personal desires, and where we're at - I realized that the "dream of life" as I've labeled it in my mind is absolutely a journey and not a destination. And it's a journey that we can participate in at any point, no matter where we find ourselves - whether on 100+ acres or on less than 1/4 of an acre in the city... or even in an apartment.

On the zipline

Don't let your current circumstances stop you from making changes in your life towards the life you dream of living. Even small changes can enlighten us, teach us, and move us forward. After all, for most of us huge life change is unrealistic all at once - but we can make many small changes and over time find ourselves rewarded and happier than we ever thought possible.

The Garage Yard

At The Pump

What's one single small change you can make right now to move yourself towards your life's goals?

*I intend to release multiple posts with photos from "The Valley" where some of the family farm is. But since I have literally hundreds of photos... it'll be spread out over quite a few posts. *grin*

Esther's 70th Birthday

Janene's mom and co-owner of The Weed Patch had her 70th birthday on Sunday!  You'd NEVER know it by looking at her or working with her (she works circles around everybody!), so here's to many more years of fun!

Janene's sister Jennifer, along with Esther's best friend Martie planned a little surprise get together - along with 50 other friends and relatives!  So we took the weekend to visit Esther's to celebrate her birthday this last weekend.

There was SO much great food and friends all day long! Janene's eldest sister and her kids were able to come up from Oregon, too - so the whole family was together. The sun was out and the breeze was down, which meant that everyone got to lounge around on the deck and enjoy the weather and the view. Here's just a few photos from various points throughout the weekend.

The Lavender Bed

Last year we put in a large section of lavender plants in the garden - they bloomed and bloomed, all the way through November, incredibly! Here's a few photos from the other day - they're starting to bloom again, and I'm SO excited! :)

Mukilteo Beach and Ferry, a Field Trip

Yesterday was Ben's final field trip of the year, off to Mukilteo Beach and to ride the ferry. It was a beautiful, overcast and partially drizzly day; perfect for exploring and an adventure! One of Janene's favorite things to do is to explore the world around her, looking for signs of life (and she's disturbingly good at spotting it!). So she was quite happy to be able to take Ben on his trip today, and to explore all the fantastic tide pools. She and Ben found crabs, star fish, sea snails, a hermit crab out of its shell, and a huge crab the size of Janene's hand. Of course, despite all that, one of the biggest highlights for Ben was the train that went by during lunch... But all-in-all, it was a great field trip, and a fun time at the beach and on the ferry...

Garden Update June 4 2012

The garden is growing nicely, but there's still SO much to plant and to do. But we've got corn shoots coming up, onion, garlic, asparagus, swiss chard, tons of peas, carrots, radishes, lettuce... the blueberries are starting to grow, the raspberries are developing nicely. Kohlrabi, beans, dill, tons of great herbs, cabbage, shallots, nasturtium, a few tomatoes. Last week I planted almost 40 cucumbers, and we've got a few different squash plants to get in (both starts and seeds), but to do that I need to finish up the next bed.... We also are working on landscaping, so I have over a dozen Hydrangaes, tree mallow, hostas, lilac, and more! We've also managed to attract a few hummingbirds - including this one here that I got a few photos of through the window... Anyway, here's some eye candy!

The Raccoon Adventure

The Raccoon Adventure

Tonight I was going back through old photos and I stumbled across these fun pictures from back in 2009. I honestly cannot believe these never got blogged before, but I just had to share them...

Back in 2009 we had been doing a lot of work on our house, and ended up leaving a stack of empty boxes in our carport for several weeks. In day I was outside working, and I heard the most AWFUL noise - it sounded like an angry raccoon. Actually, it sounded like a full grown, completely ticked off raccoon, and it was coming from the pile of boxes. It went on for a good while, and finally we decided we needed to see what the heck was going on. So I put on two layers of gloves (one a nice, thick leather) and grabbed the longest handled tool I could find (yes, this thing sounded HUGE). I knocked the box off the shelf, and out tumbled this TINY little raccoon... so young its eyes weren't even open yet! Wow!

The Raccoon Adventure

Soooo.... using my nice thick leather gloves I picked the poor thing up as gently as I could, put it back in the box, put the box back on the shelf, and sat back to wait. Sure enough, pretty soon mama showed up, and I was able to grab some great photos! Mama was pretty used to us, as I had seen her around for weeks, talked to her when I saw her, and generally tried to make friends - so she wasn't all that concerned to see me standing there with my camera.

The Raccoon Adventure

After watching me for a while, she decided it made sense to move her young elsewhere. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed the memory!
