Never Forget...Thank You, and Happy Memorial Day 2011.

Do you ever stop to think about what Memorial Day really means?  If you don't, you should - and if you do, you should.  You see, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance.  It's not just a day off, or a three day weekend - it's a day to remember all the sons and fathers, daughters and mothers, sisters and brothers - throughout our history - who have paid for our freedom with their lives.

Stop and think about that.

They gave their LIVES, their DREAMS, their FUTURES, their LOVES - so that you and I can follow ours.  So that we can spend time with our families, so that we can follow our dreams, worship how we want, believe what and how we want, and go about our lives in relative peace and without fear.

It's a day to remember all the parents, spouses, and children who sacrificed through their loss.  It's a day to remember all those - whether injured, deceased, or discharged who have served, and served and served.

It is truly a day of Thanksgiving, for without these selfless warriors, only God knows where we would be.

If you have someone in your family who is serving, let us know.  If you have a spouse who is serving, let us know.  If you have a son, or a daughter, or a friend, or a relative who is serving, let us know.  Let's fill this comment section with praise and thanks to all those who are serving.   And if you've lost someone in the service, let us know - and we will NEVER be able to express our gratitude in a meaningful enough way.

Below is an email that is circulating - it's one that I truly appreciated getting, so I captured the images to reproduce it here; I didn't write it, and want no credit for it - but I certainly hope you'll read it and think about it.

When a Soldier Comes Home

Memorial Day 2011When a soldier comes home, he finds it hard....
...to listen to his son whine about being bored.

Memorial Day 2011....to keep a straight face when people complain about potholes.

Memorial Day 2011...to be tolerant of people who complain about the hassle of getting ready for work.

Memorial Day 2011...to be understanding when a co-worker complains about a bad night's sleep.

Memorial Day 2011...to be silent when people pray to God for a new car.

Memorial Day 2011...to control his panic when his wife tells him he needs to drive slower.

Memorial Day 2011..to be compassionate when a businessman expresses a fear of flying.

Memorial Day 2011...to keep from laughing when anxious parents say they're afraid to send their kids off to summer camp.

Memorial Day 2011...to keep from ridiculing someone who complains about hot weather.

Memorial Day 2011...to control his frustration when a colleague gripes about his coffee being cold.

Memorial Day 2011...to remain calm when his daughter complains about having to walk the dog.

Memorial Day 2011...to be civil to people who complain about their jobs.

Memorial Day 2011...to just walk away when someone says they only get two weeks of vacation a year.

Memorial Day 2011...to be forgiving when someone says how hard it is to have a new baby in the house.

The only thing harder than being a Soldier...
Memorial Day 2011...Is loving one.

When the Garden Started...

We have been so excited this year to really do more in our yard and garden - despite the crazy weather and colder temps that have plagued the Seattle area for so long in 2011.  We made mutiple trips to various nurseries, just exploring (which is how we found our FAVORITE nursery, My Garden - if you haven't been, or haven't been in a while, you REALLY need to check them out!) all our options and such.  We were fortunate to have one raised bed ready to go, and we did several pots to start.  That was back in late March / early April 2011.  The garden is growing nicely, but before we show you THAT I thought I'd show you some initial pictures from way back when...

New Victorian Heart Handbags!

Janene recently shared this with our Facebook friends, and I thought perhaps our blog friends would like to see it as well!  Enjoy!

"Awesome new video from Victorian Heart Company, Inc. featuring their wonderful line of Bella Taylor quilted handbags! I see some glimpses in there of the new patterns releasing later this year!!" ~Janene

The Big News!

2011 has been a truly crazy year - for so many good reasons... but the primary reason is also the best - Chris and Janene are having a second baby! :)  We announced this on Facebook a couple of weeks ago (if you're not friends with us there, you really should be!), but thought that letting the blog friends, and our enews friends, know about this fun news on Mother's Day weekend might be a treat.

A New Baby for the Family!

We had an ultrasound, and are mostly positive that we're having a little girl this time around, which will make one of each!  Everything looks healthy thus far, in both Janene and baby (no names will be revealed until she's born), which is a relief.  Almost as much of a relief as there being only one in there....

A New Baby for the Family!

Janene is due in early September, right at the start of the busy season, so that should make life interesting... but we'll be able to enjoy a full holiday season with a new family member, and that will make up for the incredible insanity that is sure to prevail for a bit.

Benjamin is (maybe) starting to get it.  He's talking about having a baby sister, and that momma has a baby inside, so that's fun.  It'll be fun to see him react once baby sister is actually here....

Now, to see if we can get the house ready with everything else going on... :)

First Whidbey Island Trip of 2011!

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know how much we love Whidbey Island here in Washington.  We have a long history with this beautiful place, and we go as often as we can - it's only a little over an hour away (shorter, if you go by ferry and happen to time it right...) and it offers so many different opportunities for fun and relaxation.  And Ben has finally figured this out...so it wasn't all that out of the blue that he started asking to go fly a kite at the beach sometime in, oh, January.  And we finally managed to get some time from the store, on a sunny day none-the-less, on April 19th.

A Trip to Camp Casey on Whidbey Island

We went to Camp Casey, which is owned by Seattle Pacific University; since we're alum, we're allowed there - if you head up there, don't go to CAMP Casey, but go right next door to FORT Casey - it's public land, it's beautiful, has a wonderful beach, gunnery placements to explore, a huge field perfect for flying kites, and has trails through the woods that everybody finds fun!

First we put together Ben's new kite; we got the thing at Costco for like $13 - a piece of it broke that day, but I'm 99% sure I can fix it better than new.  It's a sailboat 3D kite, and Ben absolutely LOVES the thing.  Casey is fantastic, because it has a huge open field that we can just let Ben run loose on - and he runs...and runs... and runs.... and generally sleeps well all night long. :)

After we flew the kite for awhile, we took a walk on the beach.  Janene and Ben found a little fort someone had built out of driftwood, and they cuddled down together for a bit.  Then they waded out into the surf a couple of steps; Janene was wearing her favorite rubber boots, and carrying Ben - who is still a little apprehensive of all the large waves.

Then, back up to the field for a snack, more kites, and to watch the deer.  Janene found a nice spot to lounge all bundled up (it was sunny, but the wind was cold... after all, it was only April at a Washington beach...) and safely away (mostly) from Ben's spinning and jumping and rolling down hills in the freshly mowed lawn...

A Sunday Family Tradition

Growing up I always heard stories from my dad about their traditional Sunday dinner.  You see, Grandpa Harry LOVED popcorn, and every Sunday evening my dad's family would sit around enjoying popcorn for dinner.  That tradition was sorta passed down - although it certainly wasn't limited to Sundays... seems like we ate popcorn as often as we could!

A Sunday Popcorn Tradition

Now that Ben is old enough to eat and enjoy popcorn, it feels like he and I are making it all the time, too.  And the other day, I realized that Sunday late afternoon seems to be the general timeframe.  So, Grandpa Harry - this is in memory of you - the popcorn, the family memories, and the fun.

A Sunday Popcorn Tradition A Sunday Popcorn Tradition

When we make popcorn, we make a LOT of popcorn. Ben loves to help fill the hopper, and to dump the hopper into the popcorn maker. Then he'll just sit there, wide-eyed, and wait for it to start "bubbling" up into the bag.

A Sunday Popcorn Tradition A Sunday Popcorn Tradition

On the rare occassions that Janene partakes, we make her a small batch using real butter and salt. Ben finds this funny, as DADDY uses this great stuff out of a bottle....which he's still not sure what it is, because we only let him eat the popcorn "raw" - nothing added, just popped. Hey, he loves it that way, so why add all the other stuff...?

Do you like popcorn? What kind of popcorn? How do you fix it?
